Hi y’all! So this has to be one of my favorite boxes… and in all honesty I say that every month… but seriously I really love every aspect of this box. This is our Art With Heart Box and there is so much art AND heart in this box! Join us as we Play + Create + Giveback!“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” –Pablo Picasso
This Outside The Box is meant to inspire and unleash the artist in every little one. We believe art has the power to transform and to inspire not only the artist, but all of those around them as well. We believe in the power of art to make an impact in communities through murals, through joy, through expression. And our first art creation was putting on our BEK Monkey Art Smock, taking our paints, paint brushes, palette and canvas to an inspiring spot at Discovery Green Houston and painting our hearts out!
“Creativity takes courage.” –Henri Matisse
Next we started creating and molding and shaping our Sculpt*It clay. What I love about this clay is its so easy to shape and mold and it air dries overnight, so no oven and no big mess, just lots of fun and creativity. This little guy wanted to create a spider (he’s been obsessed with spider webs, he finds them so beautiful) and a snowman (thanks Frozen… and in case anyone’s asking, no Anna I don’t want to build a snowman). After letting our creations dry overnight, we took out our paint palette, brushes and paint and completed our spider and snowman.
“The point is, art never stopped a war and never got anybody a job. That was never it’s function. Art cannot change events. But it can change people. It can affect people so they are changed by art- enriched, ennobled, encouraged- then they may act in a way that may affect the course of events.” –Leonard Bernstein
Art can transform and make an impact and this month we’ve partnered with The Periwinkle Foundation. They use art to inspire and impact lives. The Periwinkle Foundation develops and provides programs that positively change the lives of children, young adults and families who are challenged by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and are cared for at Texas Children’s Hospital. From survivor programs, to camps, to ART programs, we love everything they do for children and families challenged by cancer. In every box we included a copy of the Splendid Review, an anthology of poems, short stories and autobiographies written by the talented young writers at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers. We also included a Postcard From The Road for you to complete with your little one, which allows people who view the art from the traveling exhibit or the work from The Splendid Review to write a postcard to the artist. The Periwinkle Foundation will mail the postcard to the artist to share with them the well-wishes and inspirational words their art inspires.
We visited the local Making A Mark Art Exhibit and it was quite moving and very beautiful. We spent time talking about each piece of Art, my little one picked his favorites. And we wrote our postcard to the artist. If you’re local (Houstonians… that’s you) I so recommend visiting one of the Making a Mark exhibits. It’s so fulfilling and moving to see the artwork created by children of all ages who are experiencing something challenging in their lives, but still create with heart. But no worries because if you can’t make it to an exhibit, remember in every box we’ve included a copy of the Splendid Review so you can read the poetry with your little ones, pick your favorite and write, draw, or even color the postcard and send it to Periwinkle so they can send it to the artist.
Art builds community and can transform community and that’s why I love this box because not only can we create art, but we can create community through art!
“Art is an adventure into an unknown world, which can be explored only by those willing to take risks.” – Mark Rothko
This is what Outside The Box is all about… we want kids, all kids to know they can make an impact, they can giveback, they are a part of community and can build community. Every month we include a challenge card, because that’s what it is… it’s a challenge to all of us to live outside the box, a challenge to break our habits & push past our comfort zones, a challenge to connect & to create, a challenge to think beyond ourselves to the community all around us, a challenge to giveback and make an impact, a challenge to learn about our greater community and how we can create the change we want to see in the world. Are you ready to take the challenge?
